Study Abroad

study_group.gifThe study abroad program - which at Antioch Santa Barbara is known as the Education Abroad Program - began in 1995 with a maiden voyage to Hong Kong just before the turnover to Chinese control. The first trip was a tremendous success and stimulated a great deal of excitement and interest in the program. The program has continued from 1995 to this date with yearly educational experiences in London, Rome and Florence, Beijing, Prague, Shanghai and the Three Rivers Gorge in China, Spain, Peru, Sicily, Greece and the Aegean Islands, and Vietnam. From the inception of the program, students, alumni and friends of Antioch have participated in far ranging and interesting experiences throughout the world.

The primary mission of the program is to provide a broad cultural experience to students and alumni and to make available through structured and free time opportunities more focused studies in areas of specific interest to each student. The program strongly advocates and promotes the direct experience of the international community and the building of alliances and common ground with all countries and cultures. The program sponsors the development of global skills around the international workforce, educational awareness, world economics, global trade, international human resource, and international business theory and management. The program creates and supports opportunities to pursue areas of unique interest and each student will be provided aid in making their outreach successful. It is also a key aspect of the program for participants to gain experience in global resource development and to create new opportunities for global networking. For Antioch alumni, the experience brings them back to the world of learning and awakens more deeply their own cultural awareness.

The students in all BA or Master’s Programs who apply to take academic credit receive lectures from cultural, political, and academic leaders in the country as well as visits to governmental and academic institutions. The students who want to receive units can earn 2-4 units for the trip, 1 unit for an orientation seminar about the host country before the trip, and if a genuine interest is expressed by the student, a specially authorized additional 1-4 units can be earned under a special independent study option through the trip leaders.
