Juan Zaragoza, BA, received his bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis on ethnomusicology at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2005. He is a recipient of the Santa Barbara Independent’s Local Hero Award in 2007 for his community service with youth. Since graduating with honors, Juan has been researching and presenting papers as an independent scholar on music and culture from Mexico, Borderlands, and Latin America. He has presented papers on his research at the Society of Ethnomusicologists annual and regional meetings.

In 2004 Juan founded, and has since directed, Mariachi Integral de UCSB, a community-based ensemble consisting of students, staff, faculty, and community members. He founded and organized SONando SB, a collective of local Santa Barbara musicians, educators, and community members interested in promoting cultural programming to the under-served members of Santa Barbara and its neighboring communities. Juan is the principal instructor and coordinator of the “Guitar Works” program sponsored by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and the Trinity Episcopal Church Justice Fund Grant.
