BUS 500 Introduction to Social Business, Non-Profit Management, and Strategic Leadership (3 units)
Social businesses and non-profit enterprises practice innovative and sustainable solutions to challenging social problems. In this course, students will be introduced to the history and theory of emerging activities and the application of strategic leadership as it is applied in social businesses, non-profits, and other contexts.
BUS 501 Developing Human Resources in Changing Environments: Leadership, Teamwork and Diversity (3 units)
The ability to work collaboratively in groups and teams is essential to developing sustainable solutions to complex issues and creating productive and humane organizations. Human beings and the organizations in which they work depend on one another. This course will provide an overview of key principles of effective human resource practice for managers and a framework for working with all aspects of diversity, understanding group dynamics, the stages of group development, and specific leadership behavior appropriate at different stages. Skills in interpersonal communication and collaborative decision-making are emphasized, and the course will integrate conceptual and experiential approaches to communication, self-awareness, situational leadership, creative problem solving, and social responsibility.
BUS 502 Global Philanthropy & Social Responsibility (3 units)
This course will build on the analytical and critical think skills developed in previous coursework and will examine the growing role of philanthropy and social investment on the global stage. The course will provide an overview of how corporate social responsibility and social innovation have stimulated a new kind of creative capitalism. This course will also the address the moral and ethical issues that arise when major private philanthropic resources are combined with market based solutions in the attempt to resolve systemic social dilemmas.
BUS 503 Finance I: Introduction to Management Accounting and Finance (3 units)
This course is intended to develop the analytical and critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate financial and accounting issues. The course expands beyond traditional financial concepts and explores alternative performance measurement systems that will provide a broader context for evaluating not only economic performance, but social and environmental impacts.
BUS 520 Finance II: Fundraising & Financial Management (3 units)
This course will build on the analytical and critical thinking skills developed in Finance I. Students will develop understanding of the various forms of organizations, types of business taxes, preparing financial forecasts, and sources of internal and external financing as well as various modeling techniques. This course provides an introduction to venture capital, an overview of fundraising processes and systems, and the framework through which managers can determine the efficiency and effectiveness of various tactics within an organization’s private revenue stream. Prerequisite: BUS 503 Finance I.
BUS 504 Entrepreneurship & Leading Change: Innovation (3 units)
Social business and non-profit champions require the vision, commitment, courage, curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit, drive and self-awareness to lead successful change efforts. Effective leaders understand the change process and are skilled at assessing appropriate and effective strategies. This course will provide students an opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial thinking ability and, through self-reflection, explore who they want to be as a leader, social business and non-profit champion, entrepreneur, and agent of change.
BUS 505 Integrative Strategic Management (3 units)
The course objective is to hone the student’s ability to effectively lead in the environments of the senior executive that is internal to the organization and external to investors, customers, regulators, and legislators using both individual and group decision making skills. Students will analyze strategic decision making in a variety of environments and will build a strategic plan for an organization of their choice.
BUS 506 Marketing and Communication Strategy (3 units)
Marketing is explored as an essential component of an organization’s broader communication strategy in the context of organizational sustainability. The course will combine both theoretical and practical elements to facilitate students’ understanding of the strategic role of marketing and the impact of marketing practices on the social system.
BUS 521 Legal, Regulatory, & Ethical Issues (3 units)
This course offers students a framework for understanding the intimate connection between ethics, law, and regulation in business environments. The course aims to provide a solid grounding in the fundamental ethical and legal principles that executives must understand to successfully conduct business in a legal, responsible manner. Students scrutinize their own personal and business conduct and that of their organizations to determine whether both they and their organizations are complying with the ethical and legal standards of the 21st century.
BUS 522 International Trade & Economics (3 units)
This course will present models and tools of economic analysis to examine complex questions as they pertain to economic growth, budget deficits, future economic growth in the US, the stabilization of the stock market and currency in the US and abroad, as well as the fundamentals of economics. Implications of this analysis for business decision-making and long-term growth, with particular emphasis on global trade will be examined.
BUS 600A Integrative Strategy Project I (1 unit)
Integrative Strategy Project courses provide students with opportunities to apply the knowledge and analytical skills acquired through their course work to an appropriate business problem or opportunity of their choosing. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to conduct the series of applied research projects within a single business entity which provides the opportunity to create an integrated comprehensive analysis, the formulation of a strategic plan, and an implementation plan that addresses the chosen business opportunity or problem. Projects focus on the culture of the chosen entity, financial and marketing assessments, and recommendations.
BUS 600B Integrative Strategy Project II (1 unit)

The Capstone Project provides a checkpoint to demonstrate that students have learned and mastered the knowledge and analytical skills required to do sophisticated business and environmental analyses acquired through their coursework, to create a professional comprehensive analysis, strategy formulation, and strategic implementation plan that addresses a chosen organizational challenge.
