Degree Requirements

Below are the degree regiments for programs in Graduate Education.


Master of Arts in Education

  • 45 quarter units
  • Residency of two full-time quarters & three part-time quarters or the equivalent
  • Thesis

Master of Education (MEd) & Multiple Subject Teaching Credential

  • 90 quarter units
  • Residency of four full-time quarters & one part-time quarter
  • Portfolio
  • Successful completion of student teaching in a K-6 classroom(s)

Additionally, in order to be recommended to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, for the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, the candidate must:

  • Possess a Certificate of Clearance
  • Satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement – Pass the CBEST exam
  • Verify Subject Matter Competence – Pass the CSET Multiple Subject exam
  • Pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA)
  • Complete a course in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution or pass an examination

Master of Arts in Education with Multiple Subject & Mild/Moderate Education Specialist Credentials

  • 110 quarter units
  • Residency of four full-time quarters & four part-time quarters
  • Thesis
  • Successful completion of student teaching in a traditional K-6 classroom and a mild/moderate special education setting

Additionally, in order to be recommended to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, for the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential & Preliminary Mild/Moderate Education Specialist Credential, the candidate must:

  • Possess a Certificate of Clearance

  • 29 quarter units
  • Residency of three part-time quarters
  • Successful completion of student teaching in a mild/moderate special education setting

Clear Credential

  • 9 Quarter Units
  • Residency of three part-time quarters
